Project in the spotlight
Vietnam Underwater Archaeology Training

This summer Hoi-An was the scene of a five-week international maritime archaeology training. Twenty students from Japan, Indonesia, Australia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and the Netherlands learned how to protect and manage underwater cultural heritage. The training activities followed the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage and the associated manual for trainings in Asia and the Pacific.

The international training consisted of lectures, practical exercises and field work. Students were trained in diving skills and maritime archaeology techniques, such as registering objects and shipwreck sites using 3D photogrammetry. This versatile project has contributed to developing awareness and knowledge of underwater archaeology in the Asiatic region. The training has also helped in gaining an understanding of the maritime techniques used in Vietnam, and has even led to the discovery of a possible ship wreck in Bai Ong.

The training was supported by the SCH programme of the RCE to provide a foundation for knowledge, research, policy, collaboration and education. In this way the RCE contributes to the preservation of shared heritage.

Expert in the spotlight
Since last year, enthusiastic urban planner Eva Stegmeijer has been involved in the Urban Heritage Strategies (UHS) courses organised by the RCE (SCH programme) and the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (Erasmus University Rotterdam). The focus of the UHS courses forms a natural fit with Eva’s daily activities at the RCE, including the programme Visie Erfgoed en Ruimte, which is dedicated to integrated heritage conservation. For Eva, the work is about more than just the question how cultural heritage can be preserved sustainably, it is also about giving it a place in (spatial) developments as an economic asset and key element for a vibrant living environment.

With her planning background and expertise in the field of integrated conservation she set up an appealing and well-balanced programme for a three-week UHS course for a group of selected heritage professionals from India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Japan and Australia. The course focused on heritage management challenges in cities with a Dutch past. Main strength of this course was that the participants could directly apply the acquired knowledge while working in groups on a case from their own work practice. At present Eva is preparing an intensive two-day UHS workshop in Moscow (Russia), during which two Russian case studies will be examined: the fortified town of Rostov, and in Moscow the Lefortovopark area, including surrounding industrial sites.
