| What to do with unoccupied buildings? In Reuse, Redevelop and Design: How the Dutch Deal with Heritage twenty inspiring projects are presented. The book shows redevelopment as the solution for vacant real estate. Where there are vacancies, there is room for something new, such as housing, and leisure or healthcare facilities.
Surprising combinations often follow, such as a school or a community center in a factory complex, a shop in a church or a recreation area in a military zone. The book addresses the story behind the success of redevelopment in essays on heritage policy, public-private partnerships, financing and design.
The creative way Dutch architecture offices deal with heritage is also spreading outside the Netherlands, as shown by examples in China, Germany, Italy, Russia, and the United States. The publication is accompanied by an exhibition under the same title, which is offered to the Dutch embassies abroad. Made in cooperation with the RCE, the book by Paul Meurs and Marinke Steenhuis also includes contributions by Sander Gelinck, Jean-Paul Corten and Frank Strolenberg. The book will be published in February and can be ordered here.

| Peter Timmer is Senior Consultant Heritage and Spatial Planning at the RCE and participates in several SCH projects, such as the revitalization of historical inner cities in Indonesia. Peter’s main task is to cooperate with local stakeholders to develop heritage management and to give advice on urban planning and adaptive reuse in protected townscapes.
Most heritage cities in Indonesia have developed rehabilitation plans for urban areas and historic buildings, but the budget for heritage conservation is limited and methods and strategies are needed to revitalize historic inner cities. Peter finds that for this, integrating the social aspect of inner cities is key.
Bringing new life into a city can only be done by focusing on the people as well as the buildings. Peter provides support in this by offering his knowledge on managing historical urban areas. Indonesia is so large and diverse, that there is always something new to discover. Shared cultural heritage can be found all over Indonesia. Peter loves the vibrant presence of shared heritage in historic inner cities. If you have an eye for it, the signs of a shared past can be found everywhere.

| Rehabilitation of the Nieuwe Oranjetuyn in Paramaribo, Surinam
The Nieuwe Oranjetuyn is a former Dutch cemetery from the 18th century. Since its closing in 1961, nature took its course. On request of the Directorate of Culture of Surinam, a SCH-team, consisting of funerary experts Leon Bok and René ten Dam of Stichting Dodenakkers and Nanette de Jong, will work together with all stakeholders on the rehabilitation of the cemetery from 5 February to 17 February. Involved RCE expert: Nanette de Jong.
South African Museum Delegation’s visit to the Netherlands
From 13 to 17 February, a delegation of South African museum directors is visiting the Netherlands. The visit, organised by DutchCulture, the Rijksmuseum and the RCE, is focused on knowledge exchange and the shared past of South Africa and the Netherlands. The delegation will visit several heritage organizations in the Netherlands to explore possibilities for cooperation. On Wednesday 15 February, the delegation members will discuss narratives of the shared past with the Netherlands at the Ateliergebouw Rijksmuseum. Involved RCE experts: Alexandra van Kleef and Hanna Pennock.
Conservation of Architectural Funerary Objects in Nagapatnam, India
In March 2017, a SCH-team consisting of Leon Bok from Stichting Dodenakkers and Nanette de Jong of the RCE, together with experts from the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, will develop a conservation plan for three architectural VOC objects from the 17th century in the Karikop cemetery: the tomb of Anthonia Steelant, the obelisk of Adriana Appel-Mossels and the old entrance gate to the cemetery. The main challenge is to find a sustainable future for the remaining shared heritage sites, supporting the vitality of the local community. Involved RCE expert: Nanette de Jong.
Integrated Conservation of Coastal Landscapes in Indonesia
Being a sea-born nation, Indonesia’s urban coastal areas are filled with multinational heritage. How to cope with this heritage under fast changing circumstances, determined by unprecedented urban expansion and growing water challenges? At the request of the Indonesian Ministry of Land-Use and Spatial Planning, the RCE will join forces with the Institute for Housing and Development Studies Rotterdam and local parties to look after the development potentials of the heritage at stake. In March both countries will meet to determine the scope of their cooperation in the next four years. Involved RCE experts: Peter Timmer and Jean Paul Corten.
