Welcome James Rose Center!
Fifteen minutes from New York City and a short drive from Russel Wright's Manitoga is the James Rose Center. Rose (1913–1991) was a prominent landscape architect and his compound fulfilled his dream of establishing a landscape-research centre. The James Rose Center combines scrap-metal sculptures, inventive fibreglass screens and three glass and block structures, creating a unified spatial experience with the existing trees.
Keynote Address: Philip Johnson – Portrait of the Curator as a Young Man
Our conference keynote speaker Terence Riley will focus on how Philip Johnson came to fall in love with Modern architecture and how he influenced its development both as a curator at the Museum of Modern Art and as an architect. Riley served as the Philip Johnson Chief Curator for Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art (1991-2006), where he curated critical exhibitions on both historical and contemporary architects.
The Harvard Five: The Advent of Modernism in New Canaan
Hilary Lewis, our conference co-chair, is Chief Curator and Creative Director of the Glass House. A renowned Philip Johnson scholar, she met the architect in 1992 and worked with him closely on books and publications, including his memoirs. She took up her current post in January 2017. Hilary will moderate a panel discussion at our conference in New Canaan in May.
