Thank you Friends!
Once again, we’re celebrating a successful end to the year – the 6th in Iconic Houses' existence. Highlights including welcoming 12 new house-museum members, our 4th annual Iconic Houses lecture series by Tim Benton, and our 5th International Conference in New Canaan which sparked such interesting new initiatives: Icons at Risk and the Toolkit for Owners of Modern Homes. We look forward to telling you more about these exciting developments next year! Meanwhile, heartfelt thanks are due to you our Friends. We just couldn't do it without you.
Books to Inspire
Besides the titles in our Iconic Reads selection, devoted to books on our member houses and their architects, we've been eagerly devouring some great new books. We'd like to recommend a book on the life and work of Jože Plečnik, Eternal Architect, by Noah Charney. To revive our New Canaan house tours, have a look at Midcentury Houses Today by Jeff Matz and Cristina A. RossWe've also been enjoying the Kindle book Cheap and Thin, by Raymond Neutra, about the relationship between Frank Lloyd Wright and his parents Richard and Dione Neutra.
Stay in a Neutra Guest House in Palm Springs!
This month we welcome the Grace Miller House (1937) to our network. Neutra's first desert commission was built as a home and exercise studio and generated much publicity for its unique design. It later fell into disrepair and by 2000 was uninhabitable. The current owner has meticulously restored it to its original state, adding a swimming pool and building a guest house almost exactly to the original plans - and it's available to rent!
Unique Verdict: Rebuild Demolished Neutra House
A property owner who illegally demolished a San Francisco landmark house designed by modernist architect Richard Neutra was ordered this week to rebuild a replica. This extreme and unique verdict creates a precedent for all future owners of such heritage. We would like to share with you an article of last Monday from the San Francisco Chronicle that gives the opinions of a number of Neutra experts.
Restoration Kohlberg House in Progress
Work is going well on the restoration of the Kohlberg house on Cape Cod and the renovation is expected to be finished by June 2019. This will be the fourth historic modern house restoration initiated and executed by the Cape Cod Modern House Trust. Once completed, it will be made available for tours, as a location for annual artist/scholar residencies, and to supporters of the trust for weekly stays.
More to Explore – Neutra VDL Studio and Residences
The VDL Studio and Residences in Silverlake Los Angeles, designed by Richard Neutra, is among our favourite homes that can be toured. Now we explore this compact family home, work compound, and manifesto from the 1930, 40s and 60s in one of our Specials - these are micro-websites within our main site. We host around 20 of these extensive presentations - you'll find them in the carousel at the bottom of our homepage. And you can recognize them in the directory by the +plus sign.
