 | | Screening en debat | | WHITE CUBE | Renzo Martens en CATPC | | 14 april 2021 | Op woensdagavond 14 april om 18:30 uur vindt een online screening plaats van de film White Cube met aansluitend een gesprek tussen Renzo Martens, Ced'Art Tamasala (CATPC) en Charles Esche (Van Abbemuseum). Dit event is in het kader van de wereldwijde lancering van White Cube door vijftien toonaangevende kunstinstellingen.
WHITE CUBE
In de film White Cube, geregisseerd door Renzo Martens in samenwerking met CATPC (Cercle d'Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise), zien we hoe Congolese plantagearbeiders een nieuw precedent scheppen: ze coöpteren met succes het concept van de 'white cube’, om op die manier hun land terug kunnen te kopen van internationale plantagebedrijven. Zo kunnen ze het land veiligstellen voor toekomstige generaties. De film gaat dieper in op het idee dat musea wel degelijk gedekoloniseerd en inclusief kunnen worden, mits de opbrengsten rondom het museum terugvloeien naar de plantagearbeiders wier arbeid destijds de basis van deze instellingen financierde - en in sommige gevallen nog steeds financiert.

This event is part of the world wide launch of White Cube by fifteen key art institutions.
WHITE CUBE
In the film White Cube, directed by Renzo Martens in collaboration with CATPC (Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise), we see how Congolese plantation workers set a new precedent: they successfully co-opt the concept of the ‘white cube’ to buy back their land from international plantation companies, and secure it for future generations. The film considers how museums can become decolonised and inclusive, but only on the condition that the benefits accrued around the museum flow back to the plantation workers whose labour financed – and in some cases continues to finance – the very foundations of these institutions.
