Welcome to the first research newsletter of 2022-2023!
The new academic year has started and the research of the AHK has got off to a flying start. In this edition of the research newsletter we have news about new research projects, books and publications, upcoming research events and more!
Opening CASE by minister Robbert Dijkgraaf and Alderperson Marjolein Moorman
Robbert Dijkgraaf (Minister of Education, Culture and Science) and Marjolein Moorman (Alderperson of the Municipality of Amsterdam) opened CASE at the Marineterrein on Thursday 15 September. CASE, an initiative of the AHK, is a national collaboration between six universities of applied sciences and one ROC, operating at the intersection between art, science, technology and the social domain. CASE investigates the role of art in educational innovation and anticipates on major societal challenges, for example inclusive art education, cross-curricular education (art, science & technology) and socio-ecological issues.

The Greenhouse by Lectoraat Film
The Film research group (Lectoraat Film) is launching an initiative to allow teachers and guest teachers at the Netherlands Film Academy to undertake their own research project. This initiative, called The Greenhouse, provides the context, support and finance for a group of five participants, or projects, to first work on their ideas and then to execute or further develop their research plans. The Greenhouse initiative also includes a series of four lectures that are open to all teachers and students of the Film Academy and beyond.

Book launch 'Dutch Mime' by Marijn de Langen
Friday 3 September 2022, during the Dutch Theatre Festival PRO programme in the International Theatre Amsterdam (ITA) ATD’s postdoctoral researcher Marijn de Langen launched her highly anticipated book 'Dutch Mime' (350 pages, full colour). The publication is available in an English and a Dutch language version, and is published by Amsterdam University Press in collaboration with ATD’s DAS publishing platform.

Pablo Martínez-Zárate Artist in Residence at the Lectoraat Film
From mid-October, Mexican documentary filmmaker, media artist and scholar Pablo Martinez-Zárate will be joining the Lectoraat of the Netherlands Film Academy as Artist in Residence. His residency will concentrate, in different ways, on ‘critical pedagogy in times of crisis’, with a particular focus on artistic research. As pedagogy and artistic research – and their interrelatedness – are at the core of the research interests of the Lectoraat, we’re very much looking forward to Pablo’s arrival!

Publication: ArtsSciences Research Agenda
The ArtsSciences research agenda is a product of the lectors platform Education at the intersection of Art, Science and Technology. The platform sees interdisciplinary practices of scientists and artists as a source of inspiration for innovation in primary and vocational education. These hybrid practices are operating at the intersection of art, science and technology and can stimulate pupils and students to start learning and problem-solving in a new way, derived from different knowledge domains.

Research funding for COHERENT project
The NWO has allocated research funding for the COHERENT project, which was developed within the NWA route Living Past. This project contains transdisciplinary research into food practices at parties, into clothing and globalization, and into the contemporary significance of war sites. Scientific and societal partners jointly design and implement interventions, aiming at exploiting the potential of heritage to create a sustainable and inclusive future.

Save the Date - AHK Research programme

Coming year, AHK Research Centre is organizing various events: 

  • AHK Research Funding Café '2.0': The first edition of the AHK Research Funding Café '2.0' will take place on Monday 31 October; the first edition of the AHK Research Funding Café in a real café setting. Each month, the Funding Café will introduce a new theme, for example focused on a topic, funding organization or a specific training. Location and time: Marineterrein - AHK Culture Club, from 16:00 till 17:30. Save the date and share this news among AHK researchers and/or other interested parties!
  • AHK Research Day: On Monday 2 February 2023, the long-awaited AHK Research Day will finally be there. The programme will be announced later. For now: save the date! 
THIRD Annual Forum 2022
DAS Research and THIRD are very pleased to announce a new edition of the THIRD Annual Forum. From Wednesday 26 October until Saturday 29 October, artists researchers of the Cohort 3 of THIRD composed by Catalina Insignares, Nikita Maheshwary, Igor Koruga, Cecilia Vallejos, Andrea Božić, Áron Birtalan, and Amanda Piña will present their ongoing projects in individual sessions. Location: DAS Graduate School. The programme is scheduled between 10:30 and 21:30.

New Music Conference
Lector Michiel Schuijer of the Music research group (Lectoraat Muziek) and other Dutch music lectors are organizing a part of the programme of the New Music Conference, a festival for music professionals, with inspiring presentations, pitches, workshops and panel discussions on themes that are essential for our time. You can visit the programme of Michiel (and his colleagues), entitled 'Shifting boundaries, Situating contemporary music practices', on 11 November at the Verkadefabriek 's-Hertogenbosch.

Lectures series Participation
Each year, the master of Education in Arts organizes a series of lectures on a current topic for all students in the programme, this year in collaboration with DAS Research, DAS Creative Producing and the Art Education research group. In the academic year of 2022-2023, the theme is Participation in art and education. The inspiring speakers are scientists, performers, art teachers and makers who all operate at the intersection of participation, art and education. Three more interesting lectures are planned for next autumn.

The Night of Science and Society
Lector Hester Dibbits of the Cultural Heritage research group and researcher Marit van Dijk will guide a table during the Night of Science & Society on 10 Octobre. This is an evening organized to emphasize the importance of science. Hester and Marit discuss the emotion networks method, that was developed by the Cultural Heritage research group in collaboration with Imagine IC. Location: Pieterskerk - Leiden.
