Welcome Gaudí's Casa Botines in León!
At the end of the 19th century, the young architect Antonio Gaudí left Barcelona for the first time to build a textile warehouse combined with apartments in León, in northern Spain. Casa Botines is a 'modernista' building that now houses a museum dedicated to Gaudí, Spanish art of the 19th and 20th centuries and the building itself. Casa Botines' medieval air and neo-Gothic features are a tribute to León's emblematic buildings.

New to our Network: Arthur Erickson House & Garden!
Behind a weathered cedar fence in Vancouver lies the secret garden of famous Canadian architect Arthur Erickson. His modest house, which uses existing structures, overlooks a contemplative garden, with lush plants, ponds, terraces and mature Pacific Northwest trees. Erickson described it as a forest clearing. This composition of house and garden is one of his most unique design achievements.

Casa Gomis Acquired by Spain's Ministry of Culture
After Iconic Houses discovered hidden gem Casa Gomis, aka La Ricarda, in 2013 and brought it on the international radar by accepting it as an Iconic House in our network in 2014, Iconic Houses has been actively advocating for the preservation of this treasure for over a decade. Over these years, we have consistently emphasized the importance of securing its future through the support of national, regional, or local authorities.

Iconic Encounters: 27-28 March in Barcelona!
To prepare for this March meeting for the museum professionals in our network, Iconic Houses travelled to Barcelona to talk to our partners at La Pedrera, Casa Gomis/La Ricarda and MUHBA's Cases Barates Bon Pastor. We also visited another of Bonet's houses - Casa Rubio, a private house that will be open to the public (by appointment) after its restoration - and his Hifrensa Settlement, a village for the staff of a nuclear power plant.

Modernist Houses Lost in Los Angeles Wildfires
LA continues to face apocalyptic destruction from the wildfires, with thousands of homes destroyed. Our hearts go out to all the people who have had their lives turned upside down. Our member museums - Eames House, Gamble House, Hollyhock House, Kings Road Schindler House, MHA Site Office and Neutra VDL House and Studios - have fortunately been spared, but the number of homes that have been lost is very troubling.

New Year's Reception and Eileen Gray Screening
We held our New Year's reception at the Van Schijndel House in Utrecht.  Iconic Houses members, donors and guests enjoyed Bellini cocktails and shrimp bisque in each other's inspiring company, and watched the poetic new film E.1027 - Eileen Gray and the House by the Sea. In the film, directors Beatrice Minger and Christoph Schaub bring the story of Irish architect Eileen Gray to life using archive footage and reenacted scenes.

Funding Win for Mackintosh Project
A £1.1 million grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund has been awarded to the National Trust for Scotland as the first step in an ambitious project to celebrate Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald. It comes almost a year after the Trust acquired the Mackintosh at the Willow tearoom (Glasgow) - and two fires at the Glasgow School of Art. The Trust now looks after two of the couple's most important surviving design icons - including our recent new member, Hill House (Helensburgh).
