| | The Niemeijer Fund and the Van Abbemuseum jointly organise the Theodora Niemeijer Prize, an incentive prize for emerging women visual artists. It is the only Dutch visual art prize for women artists only. In 2021, the prize will be awarded for the fifth time. The incentive prize was introduced in 2012 because works by women artists are still underrepresented in exhibitions and museum collections.
The winning artist will not only receive a cash prize of € 10,000, but will also get the opportunity to realise a project in the Van Abbemuseum. The aim of the prize is to contribute to the development of talent and to promote equal opportunities between male and women artists in the art world. The winner of the fifth edition will be announced on March 8, 2021 (International Women's Day). The winners of the previous editions were Sarah van Sonsbeeck (2012), Sachi Miyachi (2014), Sissel Marie Tonn (2016) and Josefin Arnell (2018).
“Initially, I was hesitant to submit anything for the Theodora Niemeijer Prize, because I didn't want to be seen as a 'female' artist. The realisation that this was a self-imposed prejudice convinced me to participate. I encourage everyone to put such prejudices aside.”
- Sarah van Sonsbeeck.
The submission period for the project proposals runs from 1 October 2020 to 1 January 2021. An expert jury will assess the proposals.
Participation in the Theodora Niemeijer Prize is possible if the following criteria are met:
- Woman visual artist.
- Working and living in the Netherlands.
- Graduated no more than 5 years ago.
- Available between the end of September 2021 and the end of March 2022 for the realisation of the project.
- Available during the award ceremony on March 8, 2021.
