.Dear Members and Donors,

A great way to get re-inspired and re-energised, is to join this new Iconic Houses initiative! We take you on a journey this year in a series of live streamed house tours, always led by experts and followed by a Q&A. Don't we all long to experience new destinations again? This initiative combines our professional interest in architecture with our personal desire to travel and to discover masterpieces and hidden gems during this culturally lean time. Can you think of a better way to get through this pandemic?

Invited to join the live streamed tours for free, are...
Donor Patrons, Corporate Members (€/$500/year) and Leadership Circle Members (€/$1,000/year) and the directors and curators of the 150 modern house museums that make up our network of museum professionals. In the meantime, every fan of architecture is free to join in. If you're supporting us as a donor we welcome you to participate in these live-streamed house visits that we now organise every other week for as long as traveling is still a thing of the future. In circa twenty tours you get to look behind the scenes and save the time and the money you would have spent on a physical visit. For the time being this is the most convenient and safe substitute for real travel. Join us on our journey to discover the most extraordinary Iconic Houses and meet their custodians and owners all over the world!

Livestream Tour with Q&A

Studio Aalto, Helsinki, Finland
Architect: Alvar Aalto, 1954-1955
Our expert host is Tommi Lindh, CEO of the Alvar Aalto Foundation.
Registration required

The studio was completed for use by Alvar Aalto’s architect’s office in 1955. The building is in Munkkiniemi in Helsinki, within walking distance of Aalto’s home. 'You can’t create architecture in an office environment', is how Aalto described working in an architect’s office. He designed a free-form studio section for the building, and a drawing room using natural light. The building curves around a stepped, amphitheatre-style courtyard sheltered from the wind. Many of Aalto’s best-known works were designed here at the Studio. Since 1984 the building has been in the custodianship of the Alvar Aalto Foundation. Check out the SPECIAL on Alvar Aalto, The Aalto House, Studio Aalto and the Muuratsalo Experimental House in the Explore More section of our website.

Your Iconic Happy Hour - "The Aalto" Cocktail
Next time you're over in Helsinki, fans of Alvar Aalto should not miss visiting Sokos Hotel Torni's Ateljee Bar for magnificent views, as well as to order their  signature cocktail "The Aalto", named after Finland’s greatest architect served in an Aalto vase! To serve this at home, we recommend the recipe that was successfully recreated by architect Bob Borson that we found on his website Life of an Architect.
Have a great time but be responsible as you celebrate Finland’s greatest son.
Cheers to the mighty Alvar Aalto! First the man and then the drink!

Architect: Alvar Aalto, 1959-1963
Our expert host is Asdis Olafsdottir, Director of Maison Louis Carré.
Registration required

Maison Louis Carré is one of two most carefully executed and detailed private houses designed by Alvar Aalto (the other being the Villa Mairea). Built for a wealthy Parisian art dealer, the house is situated in the village of Bazoches-sur-Guyonne, some 40 km south-west of Paris. This masterpiece of modern architecture, combining buildings, garden, furniture and interior design in a total work of art, is Aalto's only remaining building in France and a true expression of his mature work.

The Gamble House
Livestream Tour with Q&A

Thursday, 22 April, 2021

The Gamble House, Pasadena, CA, USA
Architects: Greene & Greene, 1908

Our expert host is Ted Bosley, Executive Director/CEO and President of the Gamble House Conservancy.
Registration required

You are invited to be our special guests as Ted Bosley gives a behind the scenes live-stream tour of The Gamble House. Come with us as we open locked doors, discover what's behind hidden panels and shine light in some famously dark corners. Guests will have the opportunity to join in what promises to be a lively Q&A at the conclusion of the tour.

The Gamble House is the most outstanding architectural example of the American Arts and Crafts movement. Combining artistic design principles with meticulous attention to craft and materials, the Gamble House transports visitors to a rarified world of beauty inspired by nature. Complete and authentic in nearly every detail, this iconic work of Charles and Henry Greene contains virtually all of the architect-designed decorative arts –including furniture, metal work, art glass, rugs, and light fixtures– that were designed for the house and its environment. A paean to the fine art of architecture, the Gamble House is not to be missed.
