ICONIC DREAMS – SLEEP IN AN ICONIC HOUSE > NORTH AMERICA Cossitt Cottage, San Diego, 1910 Cossitt Cottage is one of the earliest examples of modern architecture built. It is also one of a set of four adjacent and nearly identical homes designed by Irving J. Gill for Frederick and Mary Cossitt in 1910 in progressive Southern California. The design of the Cossitt Cottages are distinctly modern cubes and are carefully grouped in a composition designed to take advantage of San Diego’s unique bucolic canyon environment. While conforming to the strong geometry of cubic forms, their unique siting along a canyon edge also provides the homes with abundant access to sunlight and fresh air. Gill was a master of zoned living and provided spatial and experiential variety. He has provided the house with dynamic shared spaces, semi-private outdoor spaces, private outdoor spaces, as well as shared and private indoor spaces. What We're Reading... Our Architect - The first work of Architect Álvaro Siza Vieira and the stories of the family Neto The Neto family is preparing their Casa Abreu Neto in Porto to rent out as a holiday home in the near future. We look forward to welcome the house in our network when time comes. In the meantime we read the book that tells the story of Siza's first client, his first work, the owner's first home. The book tells the stories of the Neto family intertwined with the experience with the then young Siza Vieira (1954-57), before, during and after construction, reporting the clients' anxieties and concerns, the criticisms of the architects at the time, the displeasure of the population and the press, the scathing criticisms of the time and the emergence of an architectural genius. It culminates in 2019 with a memorable visit by architect Siza Vieira to his first work and his first client,after an absolute absence of sixty years. LEHMBRUCK – KOLBE – MIES VAN DER ROHE In dialogue – the figurative sculpture and organic architecture of Classical Modernism In Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s villas such as Haus Lange in Krefeld the sculptures by Lehmbruck and Kolbe function both as independent artworks and also as elements of an organism made up of space, light, material, water and plants. The publication traces the interaction between the three outstanding modernist artists and the interrelationship between sculpture, architecture and nature. From the 1920s Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) incorporated figurative sculptures by Wilhelm Lehmbruck (1881–1919) and Georg Kolbe (1877–1947) into his buildings. Kolbe und Lehmbruck are amongst the best-known sculptors of the Weimar Republic. Mies van der Rohe established himself as the visionary architect of New Building. An architectural approach permeates the fine art of the time, while equally art and a scientific understanding of nature influence each other mutually.
