Save the Date! Iconic Houses Lecture Tour, 9 -16 October
This year's Iconic Houses European Lecture focuses on Eileen Gray's epochal Villa E-1027 and will be held in five venues in four European countries. Lecturer Tim Benton discusses the restoration of the furniture and the various controversies which have coloured the way the house and its contents have been understood. Hear the lecture at Villa Stenersen (Norway), the Ungers Archive for Architectural Studies (Germany), Het Nieuwe Instituut (the Netherlands), and Villa Müller or Villa Tugendhat (Czech Republic).
Welcome Villa Winternitz in Prague!
Villa Winternitz, the last building designed by Adolf Loos to be completed before his death, was built in 1932 for lawyer Josef Winternitz and his family. The spacious building has all the aspects of a Loos Raumplan: built-in furniture, beautiful materials and unexpected colours. The villa opened to the public in 2017. Visitors can explore the house by themselves, book a tour, take part in cultural activities - or even rent the house for an overnight stay.
Modernist Masterpiece at Risk - Bernat Klein Studio
Peter Womersley's sculptural studio for painter and designer Bernat Klein is sadly under threat, but thankfully a small group of enthusiasts is determined to save this beautiful A-listed building in the Scottish borders. Joining the Womersley and Klein families in the campaign are the families of the architect’s close friends, professionals, public figures and aficionados who want to raise awareness of the building's - and Womersley's - architectural importance.
+Villa Esche - More to Explore in our 'Specials' section
One of our favourite private homes that can be toured by appointment is Villa Esche in Chemnitz, near Dresden in Germany. You can explore this design by Henry van de Velde in one of our 'Specials' - these are micro-websites within our main site. We now host 20 of these extensive presentations - you'll find them in the carousel at the bottom of our homepage. And you can recognize them in the directory by the +plus sign.
