us laat zien hoe design onze
relaties vormgeeft en stuurt
Van
voorwerp tot openbare ruimte: bijna alles wat we dagelijks gebruiken is
ontworpen door mensen. Over onze relatie met deze objecten en omgevingen denken
we nauwelijks meer na, die is bijna vanzelfsprekend. In hoeverre bepalen makers
met hun ontwerp ons gedrag? En: reflecteert of verwerpt dat ontwerp een van
bovenaf opgelegde ideologie? Hoe beïnvloedt dat de verhoudingen in onze
samenleving? In de expositie The space
between us ervaren bezoekers op een actieve manier het web van relaties
tussen de tentoongestelde objecten, henzelf en de wereld. Ook bevraagt de
tentoonstelling de rol die het museum daarbij inneemt. The space between us is onderdeel van Dutch Design Week 2023.
Interactie
The space
between us strekt zich uit over de tien zalen van de Oudbouw van het Van
Abbemuseum. Daar komen werken van kunstenaars en ontwerpers uit de
museumcollectie samen met bruiklenen, onder andere van alumni van Design
Academy Eindhoven. De tentoonstelling laat de grenzen tussen disciplines los. In
plaats daarvan moedigt de opzet bezoekers aan tot actie en uitwisseling. In
elke ruimte komen ze meerdere werken tegen die hen aansporen tot interactie.
Van
passief naar actief
Uitgangspunt van de tentoonstelling is relational design, dat het effect van objecten en hun
ontwerpprocessen verkent. In deze expositie zijn bezoekers geen passieve kijker, maar een actieve deelnemer. De werken
vragen om interactie, reactie en je-verhouden-tot. Ze bestaan soms zelfs bij de
gratie van participatie. Zo nodigt Surasi Kusolwong met zijn FeetBall Rietveld Table bezoekers uit voor een potje tafelvoetbal.
Tegelijk zet hij ze aan het denken over het nationalistische karakter van de
sport. Hij gebruikt bijvoorbeeld Nederlandse klompen en een tafel van Gerrit
Rietveld; twee internationaal bekende voorbeelden van Nederlands ontwerp.
Rol van
het museum
The space between us bevraagt de rol van het museum in de samenleving. Veel van de onderwerpen waar kunstenaars en designers
zich mee bezighouden, gaan over maatschappelijke crises. Met hun werk bieden ze
oplossingen voor deze vraagstukken. Door een niet-klassieke presentatie
– interactie, participatie, uitwisseling – daagt de tentoonstelling bezoekers
uit de opgedane ideeën mee te nemen de wijde wereld is, voorbij de muren van
het museum. Zo presenteren Radha D'Souza en Jonas Staal met hun Court for
Intergenerational Climate Crimes (CICC) een alternatieve rechtbank voor
klimaatrechtvaardigheid. Deze installatie houdt
bedrijven en regeringen verantwoordelijk voor misdaden tegen het klimaat. Hiermee is het project een goed voorbeeld van het thema van DDW 2023: Picture This; een oproep om de gevolgen van onze leefgewoonten onder ogen te komen en actie te ondernemen.
Embassy of Inclusive Society
The space between us kwam tot stand in
samenwerking met de Embassy of Inclusive Society. De Embassy
of Inclusive Society is onderdeel van
World Design Embassies, een programma van Dutch Design Foundation, de oprichter
van Dutch Design Week. De Embassy of Inclusive Society benadert
inclusie als een continu proces van leren en ontleren. Relaties met de omgeving
en het zich verhouden tot anderen zijn daarbij de kern. De Embassy bevindt zich
in het hart van de tentoonstelling. Daar ontdekken
bezoekers de gelaagdheid van verschillende lichamelijke
ervaringen. Buiten het tentoonstellingscircuit vindt de bezoeker de Lorem
Ipsum installatie waarin de Embassy richtlijnen voor inclusief en
toegankelijk ontwerp zichtbaar maakt.

guides our relationships
From
objects to public spaces: almost everything we use every day is designed by
people. We hardly give any thought to our relationship with these objects and
environments anymore. We almost take it for granted. To what extent do makers'
designs determine our behaviour? And does that design reflect or reject an
imposed ideology? How does that influence relationships in our society? In the
exhibition The space between us, visitors actively experience the web of
relationships between the exhibited objects, themselves, and the world. The
exhibition also questions the role the museum plays in this process. The space between us is part of Dutch Design Week 2023.
Interaction
The space between us stretches across ten
rooms of the Van Abbemuseum’s historical building. Works by artists and
designers from the museum's collection coincide with works on loan, including a
number of works by
Design Academy Eindhoven alumni. Instead
of focusssing on the boundaries between disciplines, the theme prompts visitors to engage in activities and exchange. In each space, they encounter multiple works that encourage them to
interact.
From
passive to active
The premise
of the exhibition is relational design, which explores the effect of objects
and their design processes. In this exhibition visitors are not merely passive viewers, but active participants.
The works call for interaction, reaction, and relating to. They sometimes even
exist by grace of participation. With his FeetBall Rietveld Table,
for instance, Surasi Kusolwong invites visitors to a game of table football. At
the same time, he makes them think about the nationalistic nature of the sport.
For instance, the work features Dutch clogs and a table by Gerrit Rietveld;
two internationally, recognisable examples of Dutch Design.
Role of
the museum
The space between us questions the role of the museum in society. Many of the topics that artists and designers deal
with have to do with social crises. With their work they offer solutions to these issues. Through a non-classical presentation – interaction, participation, exchange – the exhibition challenges visitors to take the ideas they have gained with them into the wide world, beyond the walls of the museum. For example, Radha D'Souza and Jonas Staal present an alternative court for climate justice with their work Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes (CICC). This installation holds companies and governments accountable for crimes against the climate. This makes the project a good example of the theme of DDW 2023: Picture This; a call to face the consequences of our living habits and to take action.
Embassy
of Inclusive Society
The
space between us was realised in collaboration with the Embassy of Inclusive Society. The Embassy
of Inclusive Society is part of World Design Embassies, a programme by Dutch
Design Foundation, the founder of Dutch Design Week. The Embassy of Inclusive
Society approaches inclusion as a continuous process of learning and
unlearning. Relationships with the environment and relating to others are at the
heart of this. The Embassy is located at the heart of the exhibition. There,
visitors discover the different layers of varying bodily experiences. Outside the exhibition circuit, the visitor will find the Lorem Ipsum installation in which the Embassy visualises guidelines for inclusive and accessible design.
