seizoen in het Van Abbemuseum!
Dit culturele seizoen staan
thema’s als inclusie, migratie, dekolonisatie en ecologie centraal in het Van
Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. Zo vertelt het museum verhalen over het eigen
koloniale verleden en staat de rijke hiphopgeschiedenis van Eindhoven in 2024 in de schijnwerpers. Maar er is meer te ontdekken – van een interactieve
tentoonstelling tot kunst die ons laat nadenken over hoe we gebruikmaken van de
aarde. Een greep uit de hoogtepunten:

Kunst ervaren door anders te kijken, te voelen en
ruiken

De collectiepresentatie Dwarsverbanden laat je
kunst op andere manieren ervaren. Met maar liefst 120 kunstwerken verspreidt
over vijf verdiepingen, ervaar je hoe bekende kunstenaars en minder bekende namen
van 1900 tot nu worstelen met de grote vragen van hun tijd. Wat hebben zij met
elkaar gemeen? En hoe spreekt de kunst voor hen? Om de tentoonstelling toegankelijk
te maken voor een zo breed mogelijk publiek – waaronder slechtziende of blinde
bezoekers – ontwikkelde het museum samen met ervaringsdeskundigen tientallen
multi-zintuiglijke tools zoals geuren, voelobjecten en audioverhalen. Doe één van de vijf gratis audiotours via de Smartify-app en verken de omvangrijke tentoonstelling.
Dwarsverbinding: Kabakov Kabinet
Uniek inkijkje in het oeuvre van kunstenaarskoppel
Ilja en Emilia Kabakov

In 2021 kocht het Van Abbemuseum maar liefst 86
grafische werken van kunstenaarskoppel Ilja en Emilia Kabakov aan. De expositie Dwarsverbinding: Kabakov Kabinet toont een deel van de aankoop, met
nooit eerder getoonde werken en al eerder verworven werken van de Kabakovs uit
de museumcollectie: van sculpturen tot kinderboekprenten en metersgrote
schilderijen. Van 1969 tot nu. Kabakov Kabinet is een van de laatste
tentoonstellingen waar Ilja Kabakov aan werkte vlak voor zijn dood in mei 2023.

Nog enkele weken kun je de tentoonstelling Positions
#7: Alles van waarde doe je met anderen bekijken. Verspreid over tien zalen
is werk te zien dat is ontstaan door samenwerking. Van een tempel vol bloemen
met medicinale eigenschappen, tot cakes van eetbare klei en een analoge film met
beelden van conflicten in Palestina. Met werk van o.a. Ellen Gallagher, Edgar
Cleijne, Yussef Ogbo-Ola, Tabitha Rezaire, Subversive Film en Nolan Oswald
Dennis.

Van voorwerp tot openbare ruimte: bijna alles wat we
dagelijks gebruiken is ontworpen door mensen. Maar wie of wat bepaalt de
relatie die wij hebben met een object? Is een stoel bijvoorbeeld nog wel een
stoel als deze tentoongesteld wordt in een museum? The space between us bevraagt de functie van ontwerp en hoe makers, plekken en regels ons gedrag
bepalen. Welke rol speelt het museum hierin? En hoe heeft deze invloed op de
bezoeker? The space between us is vanaf 7 oktober t/m 19 november te
zien in het Van Abbemuseum en is onderdeel van Dutch Design Week 2023.

Vitrine Van der Valk Hotel Eindhoven

Food designer Annelies Hermsen presenteert een
selectie collectiewerken van het Van Abbemuseum in de vitrine in het Van der
Valk Hotel Eindhoven. Met werk van o.a. Marcel Broodthaers, Julia Lohmann en
Maryam Jafri. Al deze werken bevragen de relatie tussen mens en de
vleesindustrie. De presentatie is ook onderdeel van Dutch Design Week 2023.
Solotentoonstelling Sung Hwan Kim
2 december 2023 t/m 12 mei 2024
Sung Hwan Kim staat bekend om het samenbrengen van
veel verschillende kunstvormen: video, muziek, licht en tekenen in droomachtige
omgevingen. Vaak zijn deze ruimtes ook het decor voor performances. Deze
tentoonstelling daagt je uit om je over te geven aan de buitengewone
verbeelding van de kunstenaar. En vooral om mee te gaan met je gevoelens en
emoties. De tentoonstelling gaat over migratie en grenzen, terugkerende thema's
in Kims praktijk. Thema's waar de Nederlandse bevolking zich toe kan wenden
gezien haar eigen lange migratiegeschiedenis en de huidige discussies in
Europa. Kims poëtische taal biedt ons een noodzakelijk moment van reflectie.

Verborgen Verbanden
Welke sporen heeft het koloniale verleden van het Van
Abbemuseum achtergelaten?
2 maart 2024 t/m 2026
Om een completer en eerlijk verhaal over het verleden
van het museum te vertellen, wordt er vanaf maart 2024 het tweede deel
van het onderzoek Verborgen Verbanden gepresenteerd. Hierin is aandacht voor de
onderdrukking en het verzet op de plantages op Sumatra. Hier haalde Henri van
Abbe (de oprichter van het Van Abbemuseum) de tabak vandaan waar hij zijn
rijkdom mee vergaarde. Samen willen we leren over ons gezamenlijke koloniale
verleden en de gevolgen hiervan, die nog tot op de dag van vandaag voelbaar
zijn.
Soils
Hoe zorgen wij voor onze grond, zoals de grond ook
voor ons zorgt?

Soils is een
pleidooi om je te verbinden met de bodem: de grond waarop we leven. Hoe kunnen
we hierbij leren van elkaar, elkaar ondersteunen en relaties aangaan? Relaties
met het land, maar ook relaties met elkaar, staan centraal. De tentoonstelling Soils geeft een inkijkje in hoe kunstenaars uit verschillende delen van de wereld
zich verbinden, gebruikmaken van of teruggeven aan de aarde.
Radically Mine!
Een nieuwe generatie kunstenaars in het museum
11 april t/m 9 juni
In deze 15e editie van het jaarlijkse terugkerende
scholierenprogramma Radically Mine! laten scholieren van verschillende
middelbare scholen uit Eindhoven en omgeving zich inspireren door werken uit de
collectie. Vervolgens maken ze ieder een eigen kunstwerk, waarvan een selectie
te zien is in de tentoonstelling Radically Mine!
Hiphop in Eindhoven
Groepstentoonstelling over hiphop in Eindhoven

Samen met vier gastcuratoren uit verschillende
disciplines tonen we belangrijke momenten uit de invloedrijke
hiphopgeschiedenis van Eindhoven. Rondom de tentoonstelling wordt een
uitgebreid activiteitenprogramma samengesteld om bezoekers onderdeel te laten
worden van de community.

This cultural season, themes of inclusion, migration,
decolonisation, and ecology take centre stage at the Van Abbemuseum in
Eindhoven. The museum will tell stories about its own colonial past and
Eindhoven’s rich hip-hop history will be highlighted in 2024. But there’s
more to discover – from an interactive exhibition to art that makes us
think about how we use the earth. A few of the upcoming season’s highlights:
Multisensory collection presentation: Delinking and
Relinking
Experiencing art by looking, feeling, and smelling
differently
until 2026
The collection presentation Delinking and Relinking lets you experience art in different ways. With no fewer than 120 artworks
spread over five floors, you’ll experience how well-known artists and
lesser-known names from 1900 to today grapple with the big questions of their
time. What do they have in common? And how does their art speak for them? To
make the exhibition accessible to a wide audience – including visually or
hearing-impaired visitors and wheelchair users – the museum developed dozens of
multisensory tools such as scents, tactile objects, and audio stories. Listen to one of the five free audio tours via the Smartify app and explore the extensive exhibition.
Relinking: Kabakov Cabinet
Unique insight into the oeuvre of artist couple Ilya
and Emilia Kabakov

In 2021, the Van Abbemuseum acquired no less than 86
graphic works by the artist couple Ilja and Emilia Kabakov. The exhibition Relinking:
Kabakov Cabinet shows part of the purchase, with never-before-seen works
and previously acquired works by the Kabakovs from the museum's collection:
from sculptures to children's book prints and large paintings. From 1969 to the
present. Kabakov Cabinet is one of the last exhibitions Ilya Kabakov
worked on just before his death in May 2023.

Positions #7: Everything worthwhile is done with other people
What stories are created when you make art
together?

For a few more weeks, you can experience the
exhibition Positions #7: Everything worthwhile is done with other people. Spread
across ten rooms, the exhibition features works created through collaboration.
From a temple full of flowers with medicinal properties to cakes made of edible
clay and an analogue film showing images of conflicts in Palestine. Featuring
work by Ellen Gallagher, Edgar Cleijne, Yussef Ogbo-Ola, Tabitha Rezaire,
Subversive Film, and Nolan Oswald Dennis, among others.

From objects to public spaces, almost everything we
use every day is designed by people. But who or what determines the
relationship we have with an object? For example, is a chair still a chair if
it is displayed in a museum? The space between us questions the function
of design and how makers, places, and rules determine our behaviour. What role
does the museum play in this? And how does it affect the visitor? The space
between us can be seen at the Van Abbemuseum from 7 October to 19 November
and is part of Dutch Design Week 2023.

Display case Van der Valk Hotel Eindhoven

Food designer Annelies Hermsen
presents a selection of works from the Van Abbemuseum's collection in the
display case of the Van der Valk Hotel Eindhoven. With works by Marcel
Broodthaers, Julia Lohmann and Maryam Jafri. They question the relationship
between people and the meat industry. The presentation is part of Dutch Design
Week 2023.
Solo exhibition Sung Hwan Kim
2 December 2023 to 12 May 2024
Sung Hwan Kim is known for bringing together many
different art forms: video, music, light, and drawing in dreamlike
environments. Often, these spaces are also the setting for performances. This
exhibition challenges you to surrender to the artist's extraordinary
imagination. And especially to go with your feelings and emotions. The
exhibition deals with migration and borders, recurring themes in Kim's
practice. Themes that people in the Netherlands can relate to given their long
history of migration and current discussions taking place in Europe. Kim's
poetic language offers us a necessary moment of reflection.

Hidden Connections
What traces has the Van Abbemuseum's colonial past
left behind?
2 March 2024 to 2026
To tell a more complete and honest story about the
museum's past, starting March 2024 The Van Abbemuseum presents the second part
of the study Hidden Connections. This will focus on the oppression and
resistance on the plantations in Sumatra. These plantations are where Henri van
Abbe (the founder of the Van Abbemuseum) acquired the tobacco from which he
amassed his wealth. Together, we want to learn about our common colonial past
and its consequences, which are still felt today.
Soils
How do we take care of our soil, like the soil takes
care of us?
15 June to 24 November 2024
Soils is a plea to connect with soil: the ground on which we live. In doing
so, how can we learn from each other, support each other and build
relationships? Relationships with the land, but also relationships with each
other, are central. The exhibition Soils gives an insight into how
artists from different parts of the world connect, use or give back to the
earth.
Radically Mine!
A new generation of artists in the museum
11 April to 9 June
In this 15th edition of the annual programme Radically
Mine!, students from various secondary schools in Eindhoven and the
surrounding area are inspired by works from the collection. From this
inspiration, they each make their own artwork, a selection of which can be seen
in the exhibition Radically Mine!
Hip-hop in Eindhoven
Group exhibition on hip-hop in Eindhoven
June to January 2025
Together with four guest curators from different
disciplines, we’ll show important moments from Eindhoven's influential hip-hop
history. To allow visitors to truly become part of the community, an extensive
programme of activities will surround the exhibition.
