Winy Wants a World Wonder - Why Icons Matter
Buildings, streets and squares become icons when they achieve something exemplary. Yet the architects who design such icons are often seen as expensive and egocentric 'starchitects'. Winy Maas, founding partner of MVRDV, argues on our website that we need icons now more than ever. Not only do they lift us out of dull, penny-pinching mediocrity, but they also have the potential to make a city much better.

Save the Date: 8th IH Conference 24-31 May 2025
Our next conference will be held in Chicago in 2025, with field trips before and after to Taliesin (WI) and and Fallingwater (PA). After conferences on the West Coast (Los Angeles 2016) and East Coast (New Canaan(2018), we delve into the origins of modern architecture in the Midwest. The conference focus is largely on Frank Lloyd Wright (11 works included) and Mies van der Rohe (5 works), but also includes the work of many others.
Icon for Sale - Haus Horner by Adolf Loos
This villa was designed by Adolf Loos in 1912-13 for Helene Horner. Located in a beautiful, quiet and green neighbourhood in Vienna, it has views over historic villas and a garden of some 900 m². The location is perfect due to the proximity to the Rote Berg with its meadows, playgrounds and beautiful views of Vienna. We hope the house finds the right owner with the right knowledge and capabilities to return it to its former glory.
