het Van Abbemuseum het leven en werk van kunstenaar Ilja Kabakov (1933 - 2023)
Op 27 mei 2023 overleed Ilja Kabakov op 89-jarige leeftijd,
omringd door familie. Ruim een maand later opende in het Van Abbemuseum de
tentoonstelling Dwarsverbinding:
Kabakov Kabinet. Deze
tentoonstelling – variërend van wandvullende schilderijen tot kleine
boekillustraties – is de laatste waar hij aan werkte, samen met zijn
vrouw Emilia Kabakov. Zaterdag 16 maart 2024 organiseert het Van Abbemuseum een herdenkingsevenement.
Verschillende sprekers reflecteren op het leven en werk van Ilja Kabakov.
Emilia
Kabakov
Ilja Kabakov was een van de belangrijkste Moskouse conceptualisten. Sinds 1988
werkte hij samen met zijn vrouw Emilia (1945). Sindsdien beschouwden ze al hun
werk als een gezamenlijke artistieke uiting. Beiden zijn geboren in Dnipro in
Oekraïne, voorheen Dnepropetrovsk in de Sovjet-Unie. Over de
samenwerking met haar man vertelde Emilia het volgende: “Ilja zei altijd: ‘wij
zijn één persoon.’ Ook al reisde hij sinds 2014 niet meer, hij was er op
afstand altijd bij als ik voor tentoonstellingen op pad was. Zijn dood
veranderde onze laatste gezamenlijke tentoonstelling niet, maar wel mijn
gemoedstoestand bij het inrichten ervan.” Emilia zal aanwezig zijn bij het
herdenkingsevenement.
Censuur en commentaar
Veel van Ilja’s oudere vrije werk
is een melancholisch en humoristisch commentaar op het mislukken van de Sovjet
idealen. Zo spelen
takenlijstjes in veel van zijn tekeningen, prenten en schilderijen een rol: wie
moet de vuilnisbak buiten zetten; wie zorgt er voor het avondeten? Deze
lijstjes moesten het leven in de kommoenalka,
het gemeenschappelijke appartement, organiseren. Vaak probeerden bewoners onder
deze taken uit te komen; in de praktijk bleek de gezamenlijke ruimte niet van
iedereen, maar juist van niemand te zijn.
Veel
van zijn kinderboekillustraties maakte Ilja Kabakov onder toezicht van de
staat. Een censor beoordeelde of zijn tekeningen wel voldeden aan de
richtlijnen van de Communistische Partij. Later, in zijn vrije werk, verwerkte hij
verborgen boodschappen in zijn kindertekeningen en uitte zo kritiek op de
heersende censuur. Zo zit achter een kleurboektekening met vrolijke koetjes en
konijntjes een tekst verstopt. Vertaald staat er: “fuck you!”
Hechte band
Het begin van de band tussen het Van Abbemuseum en de Kabakovs dateert van
2012. Toen organiseerde het koppel samen met het museum de tentoonstelling Lissitzky
– Kabakov: Utopie en Werkelijkheid. Als gastcuratoren stelden de Kabakovs
een expositie samen met eigen werk en dat van El Lissitzky (1890 - 1941). Het was de eerste keer dat de oeuvres van
deze gerenommeerde Sovjet kunstenaars uit de 20e eeuw samen
werden gepresenteerd. Het Van Abbemuseum bezit inmiddels een grote verzameling
werken van de Kabakovs. In 2021 vulde het museum die collectie aan met 86 grafische werken.
Herdenking
Tijdens het
herdenkingsevenement op zaterdag 16 maart 2024 reflecteren diverse sprekers op de
inhoud, geschiedenis en toekomst van Ilja Kabakovs werk:

Christa-Maria Lerm-Hayes, Prof. Dr. Moderne en Hedendaagse Kunstgeschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Bart de Baere, directeur van M HKA, Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen.

Groepsgesprek: Robbie Schweiger (historicus en slavist), Katerina Sidorova (kunstenaar en onderzoeker), Alexandra Kharitonova (freelance curator en kunsthistorica), Willem Jan Renders (curator Dwarsverbinding: Kabakov Kabinet). Steven ten Thije, Hoofd Collectie Van Abbemuseum, is moderator.
De herdenking wordt gefilmd en kan op
aanvraag worden gedeeld.
Dwarsverbinding: Kabakov Kabinet
Deze herdenkingsbijeenkomst maakt deel uit van de tentoonstelling Dwarsverbinding:
Kabakov Kabinet, de laatste tentoonstelling waaraan Ilja Kabakov werkte. Kinderboekillustraties,
grafische prints, wandvullende schilderijen, installaties en internationale
projecten: deze compacte expositie laat zien dat de artistieke
verbeelding van Ilja en Emilia Kabakov geen grenzen kent. De tentoonstelling, nog
tot en met zondag 24 maart 2024 te zien, laat bezoekers kennismaken met de
rijke belevingswereld van het kunstenaarskoppel. Bij de tentoonstelling verscheen
een catalogue raisonné van het grafische werk van Ilja en Emilia
Kabakov die te koop is in de museumshop van het Van Abbemuseum of online.

Saturday 16 March 2024, the Van Abbemuseum will commemorate the life and work
of artist Ilya Kabakov (1933 - 2023)
Surrounded by family, Ilya Kabakov passed away on 27 May 2023 at the age of 89.
Just over a month later, the Van Abbemuseum opened the exhibition Relinking: Kabakov
Kabinet. This exhibition – ranging from large-scale paintings to small book illustrations – is the last that he would work
on, together with his wife Emilia Kabakov. On Saturday 16 March 2024,
the Van Abbemuseum is hosting a commemorative event. Several speakers will
reflect on the life and work of Ilya Kabakov.
Emilia Kabakov
Ilya Kabakov was one of Moscow’s leading conceptual artists. In 1988, he began
working together with his wife Emilia (b. 1945). From that point on, they
considered all of their work a collaborative artistic expression. Born in
Dnipro in Ukraine, previously Dnepropetrovsk of the Soviet Union, On the
collaboration with her husband, Emilia recounted the following: “Ilya always
used to say: ‘We are one person.’ Although he hadn’t travelled since 2014, he
was always there remotely when I was on the road for exhibitions. His passing
did not change our final exhibition together, but it did change the frame of
mind I was in when arranging it.” Emilia will be attending the commemorative
event.
Censorship
and criticism
Much of Ilya’s older autonomous work was a melancholy yet
humoristic comment on the failure of Soviet ideals. As such, to-do lists played
a role in many of his drawings, prints and paintings: who is supposed to take
out the rubbish bin; who is taking care of dinner? These kinds of lists were
intended to organise everyday life in Soviet communal flats, the kommoenalka. Residents often attempted
to shirk their duties here. In reality, communal spaces proved not to belong to
everyone, but rather to no one.
Many of the
illustrations Ilya Kabakov created for children’s books were created under
state control. A censor would assess whether his drawings conformed to
Communist Party guidelines. Later in his autonomous work, he would incorporate
hidden messages into his children’s drawings that criticised the widespread
censorship. For example, a hidden text lies behind a drawing of happy cows and
bunnies in a colouring book. Translated, it reads: “fuck you!”
Close
bond
The beginnings of the bond between the Van Abbemuseum and the Kabakovs date back to 2012. That was when the couple and the museum
co-organised the exhibition Lissitzky –
Kabakov: Utopie en Werkelijkheid (‘Utopia and Reality’). As guest curators,
the Kabakovs showcased their work and the work of El Lissitzky (1890 - 1941). It was the first time that the oeuvres of
these renowned 20th-century Soviet artists had been presented together.
The Van Abbemuseum now owns a large collection of works by the Kabakovs. In
2021, the museum expanded that collection by adding 86 graphic works.

During the commemorative event on Saturday 16 March 2024, several
speakers will reflect on the content, history and future of Ilya Kabakov’s

Kabakov Kabinet
This commemorative event is part of the exhibition Relinking: Kabakov Kabinet, the last exhibition Ilya Kabakov worked
on. Children’s book illustrations, graphic prints, large-scale paintings,
installations and international projects:this concise exhibition demonstrates the limitless bounds of the artistic
imagination that Ilya and Emilia Kabakov shared. The exhibition, on display
through Sunday 24 March 2024, introduces visitors to the rich world of
experience the artist couple inhabited. To accompany the exhibition, a catalogue raisonné of Ilya and Emilia
Kabakov’s graphic work has been published and will be on sale in the museumshop of the Van Abbemuseum or online.
