To CLAY Alive

To get to know all the implications of clay as a material and to understand its nature, first-year students of the Ceramics Department start their first assignment with building a life-size sculpture in clay. By building a big sculpture, students not only get to learn the technical aspects of building and constructing with clay as a material, but they also force themselves into three-dimensional thinking. By doing so, the students encounter many challenges along the way. From the first moment of conceptualization, to the final firing. They get to know the material and learn to interact with its cracking, collapsing and drying. Last but not least, finding the right glaze for the surface of the sculpture is one of the most important aspects in the finalizing of the sculpture.

This crafting process leads the students to face all kinds of pitfalls. It became a lesson that in ceramics there is something you can't control. They had to accept and react to what the material is offering them. This experience allowed them to create a flexible attitude and to expand their boundaries in their working approach with ceramics.

For this exposition, students have been delving into their fascinations and searching for playful ways to transform them into tangible clay sculptures. In a way it is their manifest to say ; we are alive!
