AHK
It's time for the AHK research newsletter of December 2022!
As the end of 2022 approaches, the new research year of 2023 is about to get started!
In this edition of the research newsletter, a beginning and an end at the lectorates as well: The first project of the lectorate Social Justice and Diversity in the Arts and the closure of the lectorate High-Density Energy Landscapes. But also the start of research projects, doctorates, publications, events and more.
AiR-program 'Owning and Understanding'
The AiR-program 'Owning and Understanding' of the Reinwardt Academy has started last October. The Artists in Residence study questions and answers about how we deal with knowledge, from different perspectives, in a rapidly changing world. Curious about these questions and answers? Check out the program on the website and keep an eye out for more information about the public masterclasses in spring.

DAS Research: Climate Imaginaries at Sea
'Climate Imaginaries at Sea' is a two-year project led by ATD's DAS research and two research groups of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. Starting in 2023, the research groups will invite artists to develop artistic imaginaries that address rising sea levels. This project speculates possible futures in and around water, in forms such as installations, sounds, movements, images and objects. An important contribution of artistic research because ''the climate crisis is also a crisis of the imagination.''
Doctorates at Conservatorium of Amsterdam
On December 1st, Carolien Hermans, lecturer in Education at the CvA's Music in Education department, received her PhD for her dissertation 'Participatory Sense-Making in Physical Play and Dance Improvisation: Drawing Meaningful Connections Between Self, Others and Worlds'. On 12 January, Johannes Leerketen will also receive his doctorate for his research about the performance of Johannes Brahms' orchestral music.
What works in artistic orientation?
Commissioned by the Inspectorate of Education, the lectorate of Arts Education investigated through a review study which factors can positively influence learning performance in Arts Orientation (music, dance, visual arts, theatre and the themes of interdisciplinarity and creativity) in secondary education. Influential factors are characteristics of education, for example teacher knowledge and skills, curriculum, didactics, number of teaching hours and facilities.

KIA Societal Earning Capacity
On December 9, a working session was organized on theme 'Societal Earning Capacity'. Societal earning capacity is one of the six national Knowledge and Innovation Agendas (KIA) on research and focuses on efficient and effective solutions for major societal issues, as well as strengthening earning capacity. Attendees from all over the research field were gathered to formulate an action plan for the coming years.
Book launch lectorate High Density Energy Landscapes
On October 7, Sven Stremke, Dirk Oudes and Paolo Picchi presented the book The Power of Landscape. This publication is the result of research by the lectorate High-Density Energy Landscapes, of the Academy of Architecture. The Power of Landscape explores various energy landscapes in Europe and the US in the past, present and future, and focuses on the meaning that the landscape holds in terms of quality and emotion for its inhabitants. The publication also marks the closure of this lectorate. ATD Research Month
Research at the Academy of Theatre and Dance, we know it happens, but what is it all about and what exactly does it entail? To show this to the academy community, ATD Research Month will be organised in January 2023 with several projects in which researchers present themselves in meetings with urgent and vulnerable contributions. ATD will update the website and social media with more information as we get closer to the ATD Research Month, so be sure to keep an eye out!
